Miila Hyökki, an environmental and bio artist working as an eco-hairdresser, is a founder of the Hiukka Hyvä circular economy project. Hiukka Hyvä project studies the reuse of human hair and animal fur generated as by-products of hairdressers and trimmers. Felted elements from these fibers can be used to absorb oil spills from water systems, as nutrient-rich seedbeds, or be further processed into whole new materials, products, and art. The replacement of plastics with these fibers is currently being researched.Through art, Hyökki wants to awaken viewers to see hair and fur fiber as an inexhaustible natural resource and as the material of the future. The works present a circular economy based manufacturing process from cut hair and fur waste to complete products.

Media artist Suvi Parrilla produces a wide range of video art for a variety of environments, from large-scale public light art projisations to video visualizations of alternative subculture events
Alimentorum Fibra studies the structures of fibers by bringing them close to the viewer through the means of X-ray tomography and holography. The biodegraded nettle fibers from the collections of the National Museum compares to the microplastics generated by the anthropocene era. The work has been made in collaboration with researcher Jenni Suomela.

Jenni Suomela (1981) MA in education, Doctoral student in craft studies at the Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Helsinki. In her dissertation, Jenni Suomela is applying natural scientific research methods to cultural historic research material. The core of the dissertation is in finding suitable identification methods for bast fibres (flax, hemp, and nettle) and to trace their use in textiles through history. She is specialised in both ethnographic and archaeological textiles. With the background of a craft teacher, she has a wide knowledge about various textile techniques and materials. She is fascinated in understanding textiles from the fibre level up to whole garments and beyond as cultural embodiments.

In her photographic works, Jenni Suomela approaches textile fibers from the perspective of their aesthetics and visuality. In the context of science the micro-level natural beauty is not revealed in the way it deserves. Through these microscopic photographs this spectacular beauty has been made visible to one’s eyes.In the work Beauty of Nettle, nettle fiber has been observed by various microscopic methods. Nettle is an ancient textile fiber that has been long forgotten, but has lately been rediscovered as an ecological alternative in the spectrum of textile materials.

The artistic work of textile and performance artist Sonja Salomäki fluctuates in the borderland of visual and textile art and is mostly inspired by recycled materials, their starting points and their delimiting properties. Doing by self and by one’s own hands is important to Salomäki. She uses techniques such as embroidery, felting, painting on various surfaces with textile paints and weaving. In addition to her artistic work, Salomäki is working on a dissertation on climate art activism and its influential features in the University of Lapland.

Kristiina “Tikke” Tuura is a pioneer of art produced from abandoned materials. Her background as a film director, scenographer and property master of films has provided a natural continuum for artistic work with artefacts. Tuura rejoices and is inspired by community art. In her spectacular works, people come together to create mosaic-like visual compositions from rubbish.

In her work Radiolaria Tuura has highlighted the importance of textile maintenance in our time. Patching clothes, previously considered as a sign of poverty, now appears as a means of taking care of our planet. When making the Radiolaria, amongst other contributing participants, children have had the opportunity to practice sewing buttons and patches on clothes.
